Plastic Carrier Bags Versus Fabric Shoulder Shopping Bags

Plastic Carrier Bags Versus Fabric Shoulder Shopping Bags Plastic Carrier Bags Versus Fabric Shoulder Bags

We all know about the rise in popularity in fabric tote shopping bags, many of us may have heard about the major superstores due to release reusable paper bags who continue to charge anyone if they dare to use a single-use plastic carrier bag. What about those supermarkets that don’t wish to become too involved in the masses of publicity concerning reducing use of plastic carrier bags?

Well I, for one, know that I embrace the change and look forward to carrying something on my shoulder that shows an inkling of my personality – out go the blatant adverts of ‘I’ve shopped at….insert your chosen supermarket here...’ and in come the ‘I’ve got style and a wee bit of sophistication’.

Anyone that refuses to help the environment and move up in the ranks of fashion by doing very little in the way of spending – and loads in helping the environment - must be completely mad!

Trends aside, whatever you have read recently may have put you in the picture that the majority of retailers are supporting the Banish the Bags campaign (which encourages us all to avoid the use of plastic carrier bags) in favour of reuseable bags such as canvas totes or fabric shoulder bags. However fabric/tote shopping bags aren’t on everyones mind – unlike Marks & Spencer or B&Q, stores like Tesco don’t seem to be embracing the changeover as much as you would expect.

Nevermind that though, as far as opinions go, be it a fabric shoulder bag printed with the most stylish designer logo (Marc Jacobs comes to mind) or the simplest of totes (like the Sainsbury’s shopper) we are all willing to join the plastic carrier bag war. We now all know what we can do to begin reducing strain on the environment and helping to free the world of plastic, and it is the first and hugely important step.

So, while we soldier on and stop accepting free ‘single’ use of a plastic carrier bag, we should perhaps avoid drawing ourselves into a ‘plastic carrier bag tax’ – similar to that in Dublin in 2002 (source:- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...70&expand=true) and look at reducing our stamp on the world.

Fabric shoulder shopping bags can reveal lots about us – but not about our shopping – so maybe in weeks to come we might all prefer to hang a designer fabric shopper bag from our shopping limbs instead of cheaper looking plastic bag carrying a Tesco/Sainsbury’s/Asda/Morrisons emblems!
